National Epilepsy Week

Monday, May 21st, 2007

epilepsy.jpgIt’s also national epilepsy week this week. Each year the week has a special focus and this year it is ‘epilepsy and employment’. The week aims to raise awareness of the condition amongst employers and ensure sufferers are given a fair opportunity in the recruitment process and at work.

Epilepsy Action suggests that we can help the cause in a number of ways; We can ask our MP to raise the issue in parliament. So far Chris McCafferty MP has presented an Early Day Motion in parliament. This is a sort of petition which members of parliament sign to show their support of a cause or issue. They suggest that we should ask our MP to sign this motion by writing to him or her.

We can also attend one of Epilepsy Action’s Local Branch Days held at shopping centres and libraries to find out more about eplipsy. This week if you are in Scotland you can take part in a fundraising walk or check out the events page for more fundraising activities later in the year all around the UK.

Can You Cut Out Meat For a Week?

Monday, May 21st, 2007

halloumi-tomato-2.jpgToday is the beginning of National Vegetarian Week – a week to consider the health, lifestyle, moral and social benefits of going veggie! The National Vegetarian Society have some great tips for enjoying a meat free life and have some yummy recipes invented especially to celebrate the week. Check out the recipe for a delicious Creamy Watercress and Blue Cheese Pasta. You can even call 0161 925 2000 for a free recipe booklet.

Apparently there are environmental benefits to avoiding meat, such as the fact that it takes less water to grow vegetarian foods and farm animals give off more greenhouse gases! If going veggie or going green is something you feel strongly about, this week is a perfect opportunity to make a donation to the society to help them promote vegetarianism, you can do so on their website. Or even better, you can try being a vegetarian for just this week, and you never know you might never want to go back to eating meat.

National Chocolate Chip Day

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Chocolate Chip CookiesBelieve it or not we actually have a whole day dedicated to celebrating the chocolate chip, and that day is today. I personally think it’s a fab idea – I mean where would we be without the chocolate chips in cookies, ice cream, muffins or brownies, I can’t bear to think about it.

Each year it is celebrated on March 15th and although origins of the day are unclear, it certainly is a popular national day. I think it is only fair that we all go out after work and buy some chocolate chips or some cookies and celebrate this marvellous day!

Are You an April Fool?

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

April Fool’s DayIts April foo’ls day today and I’d love to know if any of you played any tricks or if someone got you really good. I am ashamed to say that I am a complete April fool and it was my Mum that got me this year. She’s a bit of a professional so I really should have seen it coming but she had planned it so well that I didn’t tweak. My Mum is friends with the owner of the letting agent that I rent my flat through and they teamed up to wickedly plot against me and my boyfriend.

We saw a letter popped under the front door at about 11am so my boyfriend Paul picked it up and started reading, his face dropped and he started to get a bit angry. He handed me the letter and I read it. Something inside me knew there must have been a mistake because we have been perfect tenants and the letter said we were going to be evicted. Apparently someone had complained that we had been parking in their allocated spaces, playing loud music at unreasonable hours and that we hadn’t paid our rent for the last two months.

We may have parked in someone else’s space once and did occasionally play guitars but not at night and we knew we had definitely paid our rent. In a bit of a daze and a little upset I phoned my Mum to get her friends number from the letting agent. All she said was ‘Aimi, What day is it today?’ I couldn’t believe she had got me but she was in stitches!

The letter was written on our letting agent’s headed paper, signed by the owner and hand posted through the door, the letting agent had even lent my Mum the key to get in the downstairs door! very well thought out but I’ll get her next year.

British Summer Time Begins

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

Clock FaceIn case you didn’t already know, the clocks went forward an hour last night and today is the first day of British Summer Time. Finally I can drive home from work in the light again!

Let’s now hope the weather warms up so we can start having BBQ’s as soon as possible.

Red Nose Day

Friday, March 16th, 2007

Red Nose DayIt’s that time of year again where we all get together and help those less fortunate through Comic Relief. I love Comic Relief, I make sure I have my red nose then sit in watching BBC1 and attempt to stay up until 3am; I don’t think I’ve quite managed it yet though. This year Davina McCall, Chris Evans and other celeb presenters will be hosting the event so make sure you watch and give lots of money! Oh and yes, Peter Kay will be making another musical appearance!

Although it’s a program we enjoy watching, it’s important to remember why Comic Relief takes place, 60% of the proceeds will help Africans to build a better life and 40% helps people suffering across the UK. You can make a donation online at www.rednoseday.com or by calling 08457 910910.

No Smoking Day

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

CigaretteToday is March 14th, an official no smoking day and I wonder how many smokers will actually attempt to kick the habit. I also wonder how many will be rushing out on their morning break to get their quick fix and thinking “Well I lasted 2 hours, better than last year”.

As a non-smoker I do feel sorry for all the smokers who really can’t or don’t want to give it up. I am however looking forward to the smoking ban so I can go out and not stink of smoke in the morning or feel like I’ve smoked 20 cigarettes while I nurse my hangover.

Here’s a great resource for all you smokers out there who are desperate to give up once and for all; www.nosmokingday.org.uk.
