Happy St George’s Day

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

England FlagToday is St George’s Day, a day for us to celebrate our patron saint of England and whatever you’re doing I hope you’re having a good time. To be honest until I started writing this article I wasn’t really sure what the story was behind St. George or how he became the patron saint of England.

It seems that nobody is absolutely certain either, apparently very little is known about his life. Many believe he was a high ranking officer in the Roman army who was admired for his courage and strength. Stories arose from this about St. George’s battles, the one most commonly told is how he slayed a dragon however this is a very unlikely event!

So although the complete story of St George’s life remains a mystery, England and many other countries around the world continue to celebrate the legend that began after his death around 303 AD.
