  • The celebration of Halloween is believed to have begun in Ireland where it was known as Samhain Night
  • Halloween only properly became a holiday in America in the 19th century when the potato famine brought Irish immigrants across the water.
  • The commercialization of Halloween did not start until the 20th century beginning with Halloween cards which where popular in 1905. Mass produced costumes appeared in the 30s and ‘Trick or Treating’ was not featured until the 50s
  • Halloween is now America’s second most popular holiday after Christmas and its sixth most profitable - after Christmas, Mother’s Day, Valentines Day, Easter, and Father’s Day

  • The jack o lantern comes from the Irish ledged of stingy jack, who was a greedy gambler who was cursed to wander the night after he tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him there by carving a cross on the tree.
  • At one time there were rumors of sharp objects such as pins and razor blades being embedded in soft candy and toffee apples that were given out to ‘trick or treaters’. This worried parents and some hospitals offered x-ray screenings of children’s Halloween loot to discover such items. Finding anything was very rare and there are no reports of serious injury occurring due to malign apple giving! It is reported that virtually all of the few candy poisoning occurrences involved children placing the object there themselves in bid for attention or even more sinister - parents poisoning their own children’s candy!
